ROME, N.Y. -- In Rome the Republicans maintained control of the common council by taking five of seven spots in this year's election. Two Republicans ran unopposed and two challengers defeated incumbents in this year's race.

One of the new additions to the council is Republican Kim Rogers, who defeated 12 year incumbent Angela Petty.

"I like my opponent and I respect her, she's been a public servant for 12 years but I felt I could do a better job and that it was time for a change. And I thank the voters for their support in making sure that I have that opportunity to serve them," said Rogers.

"We look forward to a Republican council and working with the mayor in the upcoming year. We've had some interesting challenges in the last couple of years but next year is a new year and we look forward to working with the mayor," said Republican councilor Anthony Darcangelo.

Incumbent Ramona Smith and Louis DiMarco Jr. are the two Democrats on the council.
