SYRACUSE, N.Y. -- A gunman is dead and seven hostages are safe after a standoff in the City of Syracuse. The standoff started around 10 p.m. Sunday when police received a report of an armed robbery at 207 North Geddes Street. That's the site of Harbi's Discount store and two apartments.

When police arrived to the scene a suspect began firing at them and the officers returned fire. Police later learned at least seven victims were inside the building and three of them had been beaten by the suspect. The suspect then held one victim hostage until more shots were fired and police made their way in.

Syracuse Police Chief Gary Miguel said, "We have entered that location. We have the suspect, he's deceased. All of the victims, all seven of the victims in this case have been rescued and we have no officers at this point that are injured."

Police have not confirmed if the suspect was killed as a result of police fire or a self inflicted gunshot. We are expecting to learn more about the incident later this afternoon.
