Fans excited about Jim Boeheim milestone

By: Allison Lazarz

It's a milestone achieved by only a handful of coaches in division one basketball -- winning 800 games. Monday, Syracuse University basketball coach Jim Boeheim reached that milestone, becoming just the eighth coach to do so. As our Allison Lazarz tells us, members of the community are both excited and proud of Boeheim's accomplishments over the past 33 years.

SYRACUSE, N.Y. -- Fans were left hanging at the end of last season when Syracuse University lost to Oklahoma in the Elite 8 the NCAA tournament.

It would have been Coach Jim Boeheim's 800th win in his hall of fame career. Instead, the milestone, and the fans, would have to wait.

"I think it's monumental. I think he's one of the greatest coaches in history and this is just one more reason to prove that," said Evan Monahan, a Syracuse University student.

For the past 33 years, Boeheim has lead his teams to the post-season in all but one season as head coach.

"I just think he's been a marvelous basketball coach for many years. This kind of cements how good of a coach he's been," said Ruth Federman Stein of Syracuse.

"I think it says a lot about the community that he's stuck around so long and created a good program," said Joni Leubener of Syracuse.

Boeheim has lead Syracuse University to three Final Fours and the only NCAA championship in the program's history.

With his name already on the Carrier Dome floor, there's no doubt how much he means to the city and the program.

"Regardless of what our win streak is we have an amazing coach, we always have an amazing team. This team means so much to this city and so much to this school. It's part of the culture here," said Alex Adelson, a Syracuse University student.

Seven other coaches have 800 career wins under their belt. Duke University's Mike Krzyzewski and the University of Connecticut's Jim Calhoun are the only current division one coaches with more than 800 career wins.
