SYRACUSE, N.Y. -- It was a solemn evening for the Le Moyne College community as many gathered for a vigil honoring the victims of an attack in El Salvador 20 years ago.

Six Jesuit priests, along with their housekeeper and her daughter, were assassinated in November 1989. They were working in the country to help advance education and promote human rights. The assassinations sparked international outrage.

Charles Beirne, who later become president of Le Moyne College, was among the first Jesuits to volunteer to go to El Salvador after the tragedy and resume the victims' work.

"It's as important today as it was then, that we remember the witness of these Jesuits and take their witness as a challenge to ourselves and the complacency that we live with, the comfort we live with. How can we make a difference that makes a difference that makes a more equitable world for us all," said Father David McCallum.

Le Moyne is one of 20 Jesuit colleges in the U.S. that holds ceremonies marking the anniversary.
