WASHINGTON, D.C. -- It was August 20 when Scottish authorities released the man found guilty in the bombing of Pan Am flight 103. At the time, they said Abdel Bassett al-Megraghi had only three months to live.

Now, New York's senior U.S. Senator says, if al-Megrahi isn't dead yet, he should be returned to a Scottish prison.

Senator Charles Schumer reiterated his stand that al-Megrahi should never have been freed in the first place. He also expressed anger over a hero's welcome given to al-Megrahi on his arrival in Libya.

Schumer says the scene of that arrival was a shock to the families of the victims. Among those victims were 35 students with ties to Syracuse University.

Schumer says he's written a letter to British Prime Minister Gordon Brown asking that he demand al-Megrahi's immediate return to prison.
