"What everybody has right now? Sore throat head congestion,” said Backus. "An incredible headache that kind of went along with all of that."
"The goal is the same, which is to keep the person healthy but the way to get there is totally separate,” said Weis.
Acupuncture has been used to treat all sorts of aches, pains and chronic health conditions. With the H1N1 virus circulating and the vaccine hard to come by, some say acupuncture has another benefit.
"To strengthen their natural defenses to basically build their immunity,” said Weis.
Like in any standard treatment, acupuncture needles are used to relieve the symptoms. They’re also used to treat the root cause.
"Stress can be a major cause of illness, especially if you feel like you are coming down with something. If you are stressed and you're not sleeping, unable to digest your food you're much more likely to get that cold or flu,” said Weis.
Josh says he's living proof this treatment can help you recover from flu-like symptoms.
"I know that acupuncture's been around for a thousand years, I know that the swine flu vaccine only came out a few weeks ago,” said Backus.
It may not be more effective than a vaccine but Josh says it's worth a try.
"If you start to come down with something be proactive and go have an acupuncture treatment, why not?” said Backus.
