SYRACUSE, N.Y. -- Generations came together to fight obesity. The program is called Active Generations. It's part of the OASIS Institute. It enlists older adults in fighting childhood obesity.

The Active Generations program is offered after school to students in grades three through five at Meachem, Roberts and Van Duyn Elementary Schools.

The curriculum includes an interactive lesson, a healthy snack and moderate to vigorous physical activity and the message goes home with the kids.

"They send home letters. We send home recipes. But, what we hope they get is to know that there are sometime foods and there's every day foods. And, they need to know that vegetables and fruits and things are every day foods and that sometimes it's okay to go to McDonald's because that's our lifestyle. But, we try to give them the healthy choices that should be every day,” said Sally Terek, Active Generations coordinator.

The Active Generations program is sponsored by Upstate Medical University's OASIS program in partnership with the Say Yes to Education After School Program.

Upstate's OASIS program was selected by the national institute as the first in New York to implement the program.
