Thousands dance their pounds away with Zumba

By: Katie Gibas

When it's cold and gray out, it's often hard to find the motivation to stay active, but the Zumba dance workout has people excited. As our Katie Gibas tells us, people love Zumba because it's more like a dance party than working out.

WATERTOWN, N.Y. -- Ever wish you could just dance a few pounds away? Well, thousands of people are doing just that with Zumba.

"I feel more fit. I've lost 13 pounds doing it," said Connie Miller, LaFargeville resident.

"It's helped me tone. It's lowered my cholesterol. It takes away depression for older people. It's great," said Brenda Wood, Watertown resident.

"I went from a size 22 to a size six, and that was no dieting, no pills, no surgeries, just Zumba and having a good time and being dedicated," said Angelica Robinson, Zumba Instructor.

Angelica Robinson lost 100 pounds in just 13 months with Zumba. Now she teaches others what changed her life. Her story was even featured in the national magazine "Strong Army Wife."

"Sometimes, I'll have to do a double take when I see myself in the mirror. Like, is that really me or is it like one of those mirrors that stretches people out? I still go to the store and look for the extra large or large size clothes and then, it's like, 'Oh my gosh, I could actually fit into a small, and it's an amazing feeling," said Robinson.

Those who do Zumba say it's more like a dance party than working out, which is why they say it's so addicting.

"You don't feel like you're exercising. You feel like you're at a party. The music's always changing, but it's easy to do. It's exercise in disguise," said Mary Schug, Zumba Instructor.

Zumba combines Latin rhythms with easy-to-follow moves, so anyone regardless of age or fitness level can participate.

Robinson says her students have lost a combined weight of more than 1,000 pounds since October.
