TOWN OF ONONDAGA, N.Y. -- Some people living in the Town of Onondaga saw a big hike in their sewer taxes this year. Now, they're putting up a fight because many say they weren't notified first.

Several dozen people living in the Southwood area of Onondaga attended a public hearing Thursday night. Their sewer district usage tax jumped 1,200 percent this year, to nearly $300.

Town leaders say the price hike is to provide service to taxpayers in the sewer district who aren't currently hooked up to the system. And even though the tax hike is big, many people we spoke with say they're more angry that they didn't know about the increase ahead of time.

"The residents that were seeking the sewer installations knew about it, some of these other residents did not, and if we could have given them some notice, I'm sure that some of these people would have been happier to have the notice at that time," said Tom Andino, Town of Onondaga supervisor

"It's a service that needs to be provided, but a little bit notice of notice would have really took the sticker shock and made the timing and people a lot better prepared to take a 1,200 percent increase," said Howard Reals Jr., a Southwood resident.

Eleven homeowners will be connected to the system at a cost of around $250,000.
