NEW YORK STATE -- It's becoming one of the biggest problems on the road; texting while driving. According to the Virginia Tech Transportation Institute, 6,000 people died and 500,000 people were injured due to texting while driving in 2008 alone.

Now one Rochester engineering firm may have a solution to the problem. PM&L has developed a software program that impedes a driver's ability to respond to text messages.

It doesn't prevent incoming calls or incoming text messages, but forces you to press a series of random letters on the phone if it senses the car is in motion.

If the texter passes, the program is disabled for 30 minutes. If the texter fails, then texting on the phone locks until the car is at rest for more than three minutes.

"We’re in studies with the University of Iowa to make sure our "attention validator" does not cause any more distraction than the act of texting itself, which is very important and if it is found that it is compounded by whatever variable, we will make adjustments to make sure we are not causing more distraction than need be,” said Craig Lamb, PM&L.

Once trials and tests are completed, the FCC could give them the green light, taking only 90 days from that decision to make it onto your cell phone.
