SYRACUSE, N.Y. -- The organization turned 100 years old Sunday and what better way to celebrate than with cake and maybe a first aid demonstration or lesson in rock climbing.
Scouts young and old gathered at the Carousel Center in Syracuse for a birthday party.
Leaders say the Boy Scouts have remained strong all these years because their values of good citizenship, character building and personal fitness are always relevant and for another important reason.
"It's fun," said Boy Scouts Council Commissioner Bill Willman. "And we have a saying that if it's not fun or if you're not having fun why are you here? And there's nothing like teaching young adults how to be self-sufficient in the woods."
Leaders say they teach those survival skills the same way they did a century ago.
