Crews prepare for Crunch's outdoor game

By: Tamara Lindstrom

Crews are currently working at the State Fairgrounds getting the ice ready for the Syracuse Crunch's big outdoor game next Saturday, but what sort of challenges do the crews face as they get ready for the big game. Our Tamara Lindstrom is as at the Grandstand at the State Fairgrounds to answer those questions.

ONONDAGA COUNTY, N.Y. -- It will be the first outdoor game for the American Hockey League and it's going to be right here in Syracuse.

Crews are working hard to turn the Grandstand at the State Fairgrounds into an ice rink. It will be up and running in time for next week's matchup between the Syracuse Crunch and the Binghamton Senators.

Building a skating rink outside creates some challenges, including keeping the ice warm enough.

"Well ice gets too cold. It really becomes really brittle. And you know these professional athletes with their plays. They can hit an edge and it comes out in chunks. So it can be, it does get too cold sometimes,” said Jim Hartnett, project manager.

The two teams will face off February 20th. There are still some tickets left for hockey fans willing to brave the cold.
