SYRACUSE, N.Y. -- New tensions between the Syracuse common council and the city's school board. This time, the issue is a planned lease of buildings to house students displaced by planned renovation work on city schools.

The school board wants to lease the former Syracuse Developmental Center and two other buildings. A vote on that lease is planned by board members this week.

Councilors say they should have been told about the plan long ago.

"It involves a significant amount of taxes being asked to be forgiven. A lot of renovation. And it sort of vexes us when we hear about this, sort of second hand," said Syracuse Common Councilor Patrick Hogan.

"I understand that everybody comes to the table with a different perspective and a different understanding. I think it's important for us all to take a deep breath. To be patient. To be honest and as open as we can about information we have," said Syracuse School Board President Laurie Menkin.

Menkin says the board wants to be more collaborative, but also has a responsibility to the city school system.
