SYRACUSE, N.Y. -- The Syracuse Crunch will make history when they take to the ice next weekend and not just for having the first-ever outdoor AHL game. A sky diver from Long Island will deliver the game puck by parachuting down to the ice.
Ray Maynard toured the facility at the state fairgrounds Friday afternoon to get a sense of the space he has to work with. Maynard is a world champion sky diver. This won't be his first time dropping a puck by jumping out of a plane. He did the same stunt for the first ever outdoor NHL game back in 1991. He says it adds a whole new element to the jump.
"The opportunity to do demonstration jumps raises the level of everything that you train for. You know, you put it all together and then add a venue as large as this is going to be great and I'm really, really excited about being able to come in here and do this," said Maynard.
The Mirabito Outdoor Classic is Saturday, February 20th against the Binghamton Senators.
