SYRACUSE, N.Y. -- Fighting for a quality education. Parents and community members gathered at a Syracuse elementary school to protest the state's proposed cuts to education.
The budget calls for $1.4 billion in education cuts statewide. That amounts to $11 million for the Syracuse City School District. The Superintendent has said in order to compensate for the loss, the district would have to cut 165 positions.
The Alliance for Quality Education and Citizen Action sponsored Thursday's rally at Edward Smith School. All in an effort to convince elected leaders this is not the right move.
"My child has a constitutional right to a sound, basic education and that state has a responsibility to provide that to my children and to not do that, to not fully fund my child's education, is not okay," said Tanika Jones-Cole.
Organizers of the rally say this is a much bigger issue than people realize and they are encouraging everyone to get involved.
