ONONDAGA COUNTY, N.Y. -- Less than a week after losing the battle for the Republican Party designation in the 25th Congressional District, businessman Mark Bitz says he has put his campaign on hold.

Republicans last week joined with Conservative Party committees in four counties in backing former Syracuse common councilor Ann Marie Buerkle. Bitz was surprised by the outcome and has spent the past few days reviewing his options. Now he says he will remain on the sidelines, possibly until June when the deadline approaches for petitioning to launch a primary.

"See what develops. How well Ann Marie Buerkle gains traction. If she can raise money and looks like a viable candidate. And we'll make the decision at that point," Bitz said.

Bitz says his goal remains unchanged -- to make sure democrat Dan Maffei is defeated in November.
