SYRACUSE, N.Y. -- There is good news for drivers in Syracuse. The Department of Transportation says it will delay planned construction on the Erie Boulevard Bridge until after Route 81 reopens to traffic.

The work was scheduled to begin Monday on the bridge over West State Street, with construction lasting through Labor Day. But Syracuse Mayor Stephanie Miner asked the DOT to postpone closing the road until after the Route 81 issue is resolved.

Route 81 northbound through the city has been closed for more than a week after the DOT determined a building on the 900 block of North State Street was a safety hazard. The building is already crumbling and sits right next to the highway.

The issue is who should be responsible for the demolition work. The state has said it will pay 70 percent of the cost, if the city chips in the remaining money. But Mayor Miner says the city can't afford it and she won't commit to an unknown amount of money.
