SYRACUSE, N.Y. -- A new campaign has launched in Syracuse as part of Governor Paterson's proposal to allow the sale of wine in grocery stores.
Agriculture Commissioner Patrick Hooker joined others at Price Chopper to announce what is called "Convenience is choice... Bring home the wine." Hooker says the move will grow New York's wine industry by 20 percent with an estimated $150 million in new wine sales and allow food and wine to be bought under one roof.
"We are third largest wine producing state in the country. New York produces about 180 million bottles of wine. The trouble is there is only 2,500 outlets around that state to sell that product. Conversely, we have 19 million consumers in the state and they have only 2,500 outlets from which to purchase wine," said Hooker.
Thirty-five other states already sell wine in grocery stores.
