Drug drop off at Kinney's Saturday

Kinney Drugs wants to help save the environment-and maybe a few lives too. That's why they're hosting Medicine Collection Day at stores across the state tomorrow. Brad Vivacqua reports.

LIVERPOOL, N.Y. -- An Associated Press study found last year that pharmaceuticals have been found in the drinking water of at least 51 million Americans. Another stat shows between 70 and 80 percent of substance abuse users say they took medications that belonged to a friend or a relative. Those numbers are a large reason why selected Kinney stores are collecting unused or expired medications tomorrow.

From 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. on Saturday the store on Electronics Parkway in Liverpool will have extra staff on hand and is encouraging you to drop off the following items. Any prescription medications, over the counter medications, ointments, or sprays. You can also drop off inhalers, creams, medication vials, and pet medications. The items will be turned over to local law enforcement and properly disposed of so they don't get into the environment or in the wrong hands.

"This is our opportunity to allow people to get it out of their house. If they're not using it, it's expired, they don't want it. Bring it in, we'll destroy it for them, no questions asked," said Kinney's Mike Duteau.

You're reminded to try to keep all medication in the original bottle or package when you drop it off here at the store.

Kinney stores will have additional drop off events later in the year but I'm told this will be their largest event of the year in conjunction with Earth Day.

Kinney stores will also have drop off locations in Auburn, Ithaca, Watertown, and Whitesboro, but for a full list, you can check kinneydrugs.com.
