SYRACUSE, N.Y. -- The City of Syracuse is going green with a new re-development plan for the Downtown Farmer's Market Lot. It's all a part of Onondaga County's "Save the Rain" initiative, which calls for building a green infrastructure throughout the city that will be used to capture run-off storm water.

The Farmer's Market center guard rail will be replaced with a row of trees, a porous pavement center island will be built, as well as adding new landscaping to the perimeter of the lot.

The new configuration will allow storm water to flow toward the center island and under the parking surface instead of entering the sewer system.

"You are really going to see very quickly the difference between what we have right now asphalt and sort of old traditional thinking and progressive environmentally friendly sustainable thinking that will help us all as an entire region not just Onondaga County, but the entire region,” said Stephanie Minor, Syracuse Mayor.

Construction is set to begin Thursday.
