SYRACUSE, N.Y. -- It's a new home that embraces two movements nationwide. The first is affordable housing. The one family home on Elliot Street in Syracuse was built by Habitat for Humanity, along with several partners.
In the end, a family who might not normally qualify for a mortgage can buy the home at zero interest. Monthly payments on the principal can end up being less than $200.
The new home also is an example of visitability. The idea is to build features into new homes that allow them to be accessible to the handicapped. Local groups representing the disabled are hoping, eventually, for requirements that all new homes meet those standards.
