Community builds deck for paralyzed mom
Volunteers from all over Onondaga County have been out hammering and sawing away the weekend to build a deck for a paralyzed Warners woman. It's a job that's inspired others to pitch in, and as our Katie Gibas reports, it just may inspire Judy Aguirre to someday walk again.

ONONDAGA COUNTY, N.Y. -- Judy Aguirre's life changed in an instant last September when she fell down a flight of stairs in her Warners home and broke her neck, which left her paralyzed.
"I don't remember the fall exactly, but remember laying down at the bottom. I knew I was paralyzed. I couldn't move," said Aguirre.
After several months of rehab, she can move her upper body and left leg, but she's still confined to a wheelchair.
"There's a lot of work to be done, but you try to stay positive and you know, you keep good energy out there. That's important," said Aguirre.
The entire community has rallied behind Aguirre and her family. Several organizations have donated materials to build her an accessible deck. And McClurg Construction workers are doing all the labor for free.
"It makes me feel really good. There are people out there that just want to help. And they're ready to do it. You just have to ask. And there have been people right along that have been amazing, said Aguirre. "The volunteers have all been here with a big smile on their face. They're happy to help and I've been amazed. It's really an awesome thing that everybody's out here. And even Scott McClurg ,who's the president of McClurg Construction, is out here. He's hauling wood and helping out."
Those who are working on the deck say after meeting Aguirre and seeing how much of a positive person she is, there was no question in their mind about volunteering to build her a deck.
"She's Miss Positive. You'd never know that she has a disability and I think that's really the thing that set Brian, my partner, and I off. It's neat when we can get the whole company to work together on one project. It certainly helps morale and just brings the company together as a unified force," said Scott McClurg.
Aguirre says all the support is a big motivator to work even harder on her physical therapy so that she can one day walk again.
The deck should be mostly completed by Monday and the Aguirres hope to be able to throw their first of many parties on the deck very soon.
