ONONDAGA COUNTY, N.Y. -- Does Onondaga County need a legislature with 19 members? Or could it get by with fewer lawmakers making the decisions?
Legislators have a chance to change the shape of county government as they prepare to redraw district lines once the 2010 census is complete. One proposal would cut the number of lawmakers from 19 to 17. One plan goes even further, reducing the total number to nine.
"I'm much more inclined to a more radical approach. To send a signal that we are so serious about reforming, changing, cutting the size of government, we're willing to start with ourselves," said Onondaga County Legislator Thomas Buckel.
Lawmakers say they have a few months to review the various plans and produce a bi-partisan proposal. They are also discussing whether to continue two year terms for county legislators or change the term to four years.
