ONONDAGA COUNTY, N.Y. -- For as far as the eye could see, Iron Girls masked Oneida Shores Park.

Before the grueling swim, bike ride and run, each athlete came here with their own story; average women who have now far succeeded mediocrity. One participant lost 175 pounds and used the triathlon to show off her new body.

"It's just a way of becoming a participant in life as opposed to being a spectator, which is where you were when you're 175 pounds overweight," said Antoinetta Clemente, a local 'biggest loser.'

Kelly Covert celebrates being cancer-free.

"I'm just thankful. I always think I'm thankful that I'm here. I'm thankful that I'm able to do this. I'm thankful that I'm able to be out here with these girls today," said Covert.

Janet Ohlsen discovered a tumor in her neck after the Iron Girl event last year. She's also cancer-free and was right back in the running this year. She's doing it for her son, and most importantly, herself.

"It's just wonderful to see so many women getting involved, doing something for themselves besides their family. We deserve some time for ourselves," said Ohlsen.

Time to revel in being a woman.

This is the second year that the Iron Girl Triathlon has come to Central New York and it was a sold-out event.
