SYRACUSE, N.Y. -- As part of a continuing effort to push green technology, two more wind turbines have been installed on top of Carousel Center in Syracuse.
The turbines were built by WindTamer Corporation, based out of Rochester. These are the company's first turbines in Syracuse and they mark the first time the company has installed its units on a roof.
Each unit is expected to produce up to 3,500 kilowatt hours of electricity each year, with a unique design that allows the turbine to enhance the wind already passing through.
"You have a push-pull type effect happening with it. And when we did the wind tunnel testing, we would put 30 miles per hour wind in it and within the body of the system, it creates 45 miles per hour wind in the machine. So we have the ability to move the blades to 45 miles per hour and get 1.5 times more power that way," said Bill Schmitz, WindTamer Corporation CEO.
The installations were made possible through a federal grant designed to showcase renewable energy technologies.
