LIVERPOOL, N.Y. -- Twenty six passengers were loaded onto a double-decker MegaBus Friday night in Pennsylvania. They were northbound to Syracuse, Buffalo, and eventually Toronto.

It was hours later, in the middle of the night when tragedy struck.

"It struck an overhead bridge, flipped on its side. It was a double decker bus,” said Kevin Walsh, Onondaga County Sheriff.

"We noticed we had 25-30 people, some in the bus, some outside, some on the ground,” said Gary Vincitore, Liverpool Fire Chief.

The double-decker bus didn't clear the ten foot nine bridge on the Onondaga Lake Parkway. Several people were killed, and over 20 others were hospitalized.

"We have a command center setup at the Crown Plaza Hotel. We are working with local police, state and county, and certainly the Red Cross,” said Don Carmichael, Coach USA Senior Vice President of Safety.

By mid morning on Saturday, the bus was being hauled away. Investigators were still on scene working to piece this case together. One main question was how and why was the driver travelling off his designated route, down the Onondaga Lake Parkway?

"We’ve never had an accident of this magnitude, ever. The company has carried more than seven million passengers in North America and Canada. This is the first time that we've had an accident like this,” said Carmichael.

But it's not the only tragic accident this roadway has seen. This is the second fatal accident in one month’s time. Authorities say in this case though it was likely a crash that could have been prevented.

"Obviously the driver didn't see the signs or didn't realize the height of his bus, that the double-decker bus wouldn't fit under that bridge,” said Walsh.

Those who survived the crash say the experience was horrifying.

"Then there was, just heard this big crash and everybody was thrown around and I looked up to where the driver was and just a big concrete wall there and so I guess he went into the concrete abutment and it took the top off,” said Vicky and Roy Reed, bus passengers.

At this point no charges have been filed. Police expect to charge the driver with a traffic infraction for disregarding the signals and signage.

Police are still investigating if any criminal charges will be filed.
