Getting a complete tally of results was a challenge on primary night in Oneida County. Ballot counting was suspended not long after the polls closed, delaying the results coming in. Iris St. Meran joined us from the Board of Elections and has more on what went wrong.

ONEIDA COUNTY, N.Y. -- When counting was suspended Tuesday night, the Board of Elections had numbers from roughly 65 percent of the machines. This was the first time all election districts used the optical scan machines.

Both the republican and democratic election commissioners said the machines worked well. They had little to no problems.

The challenge began once the polls closed. Election inspectors are supposed to call in as soon as they have completed numbers.

This new voting system brings new responsibilities. Some inspectors had trouble with the paperwork and calling in those numbers, which delayed the results coming in.

"Some of them got it. They were right on task and knew what they were doing. Others had difficulty transferring the information from the results tape to the call sheet," said Republican Commissioner Pamela Mandryck.

There also weren't as many inspectors as usual working, which added to the challenges.

By the general election, at the earliest, the commissioners hope to revamp the call in sheet, which lists totals for each candidate. They say they will continue to stress the importance of getting those results called in as soon as possible. Unofficial numbers are expected to be completed Wednesday.
