PHOENIX, N.Y. -- Phoenix Police Chief Rod Carr was on his own when the call came in, a report of two masked gunman brandishing a silver handgun had broken into an apartment on Cherry Street around one Thursday afternoon.

"I don't know, you know, what they were looking for. But apparently a couple of shots were fired. No one was hit," Carr said.

"I heard screaming and I looked out and there was a woman running down the road and then a heavier-set guy with her. And then I took and shut the doors and I looked out and saw somebody with her with a gun," said neighbor Patricia Hamblin.

State Police and the Oswego Sheriff's department responded to the call for backup.

"The sheriff's department SWAT team made a textbook entry into the home, deployed a flash-bang and did a room by room search," said Carr.

But the suspects had fled, leaving neighbors on edge.

"We live right next door and we don't know who they are," Hamblin said.

"I think anytime you have this type of a violent crime and home invasion and shots are fired, that is a cause for concern," said Carr.

But the chief said he's confident the suspects will be brought to justice.
