SYRACUSE, N.Y. -- The goal is to aid a local group of refugees in helping to meet their needs in the future. Members of local community groups, backed by volunteers from Alliance Bank, are joining with members of the local Congolese community to develop a community garden along Lodi Street.

The work underway to prepare planting beds will mean, come next spring, refugees will be able to plant crops that they can use to help feed their families.

"This is a worthy goal. One that's going to take a day out of time for you today, or, for some of us, before this process, but one that we believe our whole community will benefit from," said Syracuse Mayor Stephanie Miner.

Similar gardens have been developed for other groups on the north side. Neighborhood groups are hoping to make them a common sight across the city.
