SYRACUSE, N.Y. -- A historic part of downtown Syracuse is getting some major upgrades. Wednesday, the city's Downtown Committee gathered with those who helped make the project a reality. Members announced the beginning of $16 million in renovations to the Landmark Theatre.
Among the improvements, the backstage area will be demolished and a new larger stage house will takes its place while the stage will be made larger to accommodate full-scale Broadway productions.
Organizers say the renovations won't only affect the theatre, but it will also have a significant impact on Central New York.
"Not only will this lead directly to revenues coming into the city, and bringing people into this city, but it's a beacon connecting the past to the future of what this city and this region will stand for," said Syracuse University Chancellor Nancy Cantor.
The renovations are expected to take about a year to complete.
