Centro uses real time technology

By: Brad Vivacqua

If you use the Centro bus service in downtown Syracuse or the SU hill, you're going to like this. Centro recently launched a new GPS pilot program called "Bus Time" allowing passengers to find out how long it will take for a bus to arrive at select locations. Our Brad Vivacqua is on South State Street in downtown Syracuse this morning and has more on this.

SYRACUSE, N.Y. -- Right now, this new technology can be found at the Goldstein bus stop on SU's South campus and the Warehouse in downtown Syracuse. But in the coming weeks, you'll find this at more stops along the Connective Corridor.

By next month about 15 Centro stops in the city will have large LED signs displaying minute countdowns for precise bus arrival times. The system will also feature audio announcements of upcoming stops to give passengers an exact indication of how long they have to wait.

In addition, through Centro's website passengers will be able to find an interactive map of 20 buses along the Connective Corridor linking SU to downtown.

Riders will be able to input their current location and destination to track their bus to the very minute.

"We live in an age in which people expect to have information at their fingertips instantaneously. And, this is kind of meeting that expectation of today's consumer. That they want to be able to log on to their PDA and their blackberry and get instant information, and this system provides that for them," said Steven Koegel with Centro.

Centro officials say this new technology will be fully up and running in a few weeks. The Bus Time system is a partnership between Centro, Syracuse University, and the Connective Corridor.

This is going to be tested for 18-months here in areas of the Connective Corridor, and if it seems to work well Centro plans to offer it in other areas. Bus Time technology is being used in larger cities including New York, Chicago, and Richmond Virginia.
