SYRACUSE, N.Y. -- The Syracuse VA Medical Center is celebrating the opening of its newly renovated and expanded inpatient psychiatric unit.

Officials say it features a state of the art design, which is more open and welcoming while also promoting safety for the veterans it serves. The unit is now split into two wings with separate showers and more private rooms. There's also more to keep the veterans entertained and comfortable.

"We've got two active rooms with large screen TVs and Wii games and that kind of thing. We have a fireplace on the unit so we have a much more homelike environment," said Dr. Judy Hayman, Behavioral Health Care Line Manager.

The expansion was completed over the last several years at a cost of $2.5 million.
