SYRACUSE, N.Y. -- The City of Syracuse and Onondaga County are recognized for their efforts to create a green and sustainable community.

GreeningUSA announced this morning that Syracuse is the first community in the nation to complete the organization's 12 trait sustainability assessment. The group presented the city with a "Sustainable Community" award.

"The city of Syracuse was extremely brave in just undertaking that assessment. It's an incredibly in depth, holistic assessment and not only publicly stating what they're doing well, but also stating what they need to improve on, I just commend them," said Diane Brandli.

The county was also recognized by the organization for its Save the Rain initiative.
