LIVERPOOL, N.Y. -- "I'm very sorry. And it hurts me a lot that I have to lose my loved ones. I'll never have a family again, never. I loved Debbie, and it's hard."

The man behind the wheel in a deadly crash in the Town of Clay has been arraigned on several charges. The sheriff's office says Mark Richter, 22, was driving drunk when he ran into a tree on Grampian Road, at the intersection with Braemar Drive early Friday morning.

Four other people were in the car, including his toddler son and the boy's mother, Debra Brown, 23. Brown was taken to Upstate University Hospital where she was pronounced dead. Everyone else was treated for minor injuries.

Richter has been charged with vehicular manslaughter, three counts of endangering the welfare of a child, one count of unlawfully dealing with a child, speeding and felony DWI under Leandra's Law.

Deputies say they hope that these charges prevent others from committing similar crimes.

"I think that if it works as an example, it prevents somebody else from getting behind the wheel and causing additional fatal accidents," said Onondaga County Sheriff Kevin Walsh. "This is what he is being charged with because of his actions and because of the seriousness of this particular case."

Detectives say the group, which also included a 16-year-old, had attended a house party in Syracuse. Richter is also accused of providing alcohol to the teen.

Bail for Richter has been set at $20,000. A court date is set for Monday.
