SYRACUSE, N.Y. -- The Salvation Army kicks off a week to highlight the work it does in the community and to thank all the volunteers and businesses that help.

A ceremony was held in front of Syracuse's City Hall Monday morning for National Salvation Army Week. The Salvation Army has over 40 programs in Onondaga County that run year-round, including day care centers, shelters for teen runaways and a food pantry. It's work that wouldn't be possible without help from the community, so the Salvation Army is delivering donuts to their partners and veteran's groups. It's a tradition that dates back to the first world war.

"A group of Salvation Army women went to the front lines in France and actually baked donuts and delivered to the soldiers that were over there," said Major Dave Champlin, Salvation Army Area Commander.
