ALBANY, N.Y. -- Stony Brook University is looking to cash in on the SUNY 2020 plan.
School officials met with Governor Andrew Cuomo, Senate Majority Leader Dean Skelos, Assembly Speaker Sheldon Silver and other state leaders. They presented their pitch for why the school should receive funding.
Funding will be distributed based on the school's plan to meet certain points of criteria such as boosting the local economy, revitalizing the region and engaging in partnerships to increase academic benefits.
Stony Brook, University at Buffalo, UAlbany and Binghamton are all eligible to take part in the program.
Despite the additional funding, the plans would likely cause tuition to go up at those schools.
"Raising the tuition, obviously there's an upside and a downside like with any action you take in life, we understand the need for more revenues for the schools, we understand the investment theory of tuition. The downside is, you could be excluding a student because of that increase and now it's not affordable for a person. A student, who would otherwise be able to afford the education now can't," said Governor Cuomo.
Plans from all the schools will be reviewed by SUNY Chancellor Nancy Zimpher and recommended to the Empire State Development Corporation Board for approval.
