UTICA, N.Y. -- We're learning more about what exactly happened in the early morning hours Tuesday when Oneida County Sheriff's Deputy Kurt Wyman was shot and killed during a six hour standoff.

District Attorney Scott McNamara confirms Wyman was wearing a bullet-proof vest when he was shot in the throat by Christian Patterson, 40.

Wyman was outside the house on Knoxboro Road when he was hit and Patterson was inside the garage, but beyond that, no details are being released about what happened in the moments before the shooting.

Patterson is in critical condition at St. Elizabeth's Hospital in Utica, but is expected to recover from his injuries. He underwent surgery Wednesday for injuries to his left hand and arm and Tuesday for internal injuries. Officials say they're waiting until he's conscious and lucid before they arraign him.

Also recovering in a local hospital is Deputy Wyman's wife, Lauren. She gave birth to a baby girl, Adyson Jynnette. Mother and baby are doing fine.

The couple also has an 18-month-old son.

Funeral services for Deputy Wyman will be held Monday morning in Utica. They will be at the Utica Memorial Auditorium on Oriskany Street.

The funeral starts at 11 a.m. and it is open to the public.

The Oneida County Police Benevolent Association has also set up a trust fund for the Wyman family. Contributions can be mailed to OCPBA, Wyman Family Benefit Fund, PO Box 376, Westmoreland, NY 13490.
