Sheriff: Crash 'One of the Worst Accidents I've Ever Seen'
Calling it "a horrific accident and tragedy," police in Yates County said five people are dead and several more injured in a crash Tuesday afternoon.
According to the Yates County Sheriff’s Office, a tractor was towing a crop sprayer and heading south on Pre-Emption Road in the town of Benton, Yates County, around 1 p.m. Tuesday.
Police said a car then attempted to pass the tractor in a no-pass zone. A van, with a driver and 13 Amish passengers inside, was heading north.
According to police, the car hit the van, sending the van into the path of the tractor. The van and tractor collided, and as police put it, became entangled.
The Yates County Sheriff said five people were dead at the scene. Seven of the injured are at Strong Hospital in Rochester, while one is at a hospital in Geneva. Police said the driver of the farm equipment was taken to a hospital in Geneva as well. One person was treated at the scene.
Police said that all of the injured are adults, and many are couples. No children were injured, according to police.
Sheriff Ron Spike said the Amish people inside the van were from the area of Jasper and Woodhull in Steuben County.
The driver of the car was not injured. Police said the driver is being questioned at the Sheriff’s Office.
Police said it took more than two hours to remove everyone involved from the scene. Police said a makeshift morgue has been set up with a refrigerated trailer truck at Soldiers and Sailors Hospital in Penn Yan. Four bodies are in the truck, while one is at the morgue.
Police aren’t yet releasing names of the victims, and are working to identify everyone. Some of the victims could die from their injuries, according to police.
