Festival honors students involved in summer youth program
A few thousand students in the Syracuse City School District have been sharpening their skills in a number of topics this summer. That's thanks to the Say Yes To Education Summer Youth Camp that started earlier this month. Today, a festival will take place at Thornden Park to celebrate their accomplishments. SYRACUSE, N.Y. -- About 3,000 students in the Syracuse City School District ranging from Kindergarten to fifth grade in 18 schools have been working on everything from English and math to art and music during the Say Yes To Education Summer Youth Camp.
A number of tents have been set up at Thornden Park for an all-day festival that will take place today to showcase the students' work. About 120 students have been participating in the camp at Bellevue Elementary School.
Since July 5th, students have been working with a group of youth enrichment specialists. Students have honed their skills by writing stories, solving math equations, and learning more about health and fitness.
Today's festival will allow the students to share their work with the community and be honored for their accomplishments.
Say Yes Camp Bellevue Site Director Carole Bildstein said, "We just encourage the entire community come out and see what children are capable of, and see what children in Syracuse are capable of so that they can really have confidence in this generation of kids."
Today's festival at Thornden Park will go on until about 1:30 p.m. when a closing ceremony will take place.
Syracuse mayor Stephanie Minor is also expected to visit with the students today.
Volunteers are also needed to assist with today's event so if you're interested you can register there this morning.
