SYRACUSE, N.Y. -- A local building gets a new environmentally-friendly roof with some help from Onondaga County's Green Improvement Fund.

The roof of the Monroe Building in downtown Syracuse now has a surface that will retain storm water. It's projected to capture more than 90,000 gallons of water each year.

The building's owner applied for a grant through the GIF program, which is part of the county's Save the Rain campaign aimed at reducing storm water pollution and helping with the cleanup of Onondaga Lake.

"It's a great way for us to do what we need to do to satisfy the court order and clean the lake and at the same time provide some resources so Jeff has an incentive, instead of building a traditional roof, we now have a more environmentally-friendly roof that's slowing the rain water down. I think he's probably going to see a benefit on his utility costs and less energy," Onondaga County Executive Joanie Mahoney said.

The Green Improvement Fund covers several areas in the City of Syracuse.
