SYRACUSE, N.Y. -- Gunshots were fired early Saturday morning claiming the lives of two.
"Roughly around 4:53 this morning the Syracuse Police were called to a shooting with injuries on the 100 block of West Glen Ave," said Syracuse Police Sgt. Gary Bulinski.
Lavonna Hamilton, 17, and Maurice Miller, 24, both from Syracuse, were pronounced dead at the scene. A third victim, Eric Bellamy, 24, also from Syracuse, is listed in stable condition at Upstate University Hospital with a gunshot wound to the back. Police are searching for suspects.
"We're using all the resources available to conduct the investigation and to find out which person or persons are available for this so we can bring them to justice," said Sgt. Bulinski.
So far this year, Syracuse Police say crime is down compared to 2010 and they're attributing that in part to arrests of several alleged gang members.
But for people on the Southside, that isn't enough. They say the crime continues to happen and people keep dying.
"If you keep throwing these babies' daddies in jail, you're only going to have another baby born with another attitude and it's going to keep going on with this vicious cycle," said Gloria Barnett of Syracuse.
Barnett, like many of her neighbors, has seen the violence increase and at the hands of younger individuals. It's getting to the point that many of these residents are afraid to walk the streets or even talk about what happens on them.
"This has gotta stop, it's gotta stop, it's gotta stop," said Barnett.
