A man is in custody for a shooting that killed two people and injured a third in Syracuse. As our Erin Connolly tells us, police say a dangerous new drug played a role in the murders.

SYRACUSE, N.Y. -- It started as an overnight ride with a group of friends, but police say it ended with the deaths of two young people.

According to investigators, Martinous Hudson, 28, Lavonna Hamilton, 17, Maurice Miller, 24, and Eric Bellamy, 24, were driving around smoking marijuana Saturday morning when Hudson and Miller began smoking a hallucinogenic drug known as "water."

That's when police say the situation got out of control.

"Martinous Hudson turns down the music in the vehicle, and he starts to rant incoherently about the devil,” said Frank Fowler, Syracuse Police Chief.

Fowler says Hudson then fired two shots, killing Hamilton and Miller. Bellamy was shot while running from the vehicle and taken to the hospital with a gunshot wound to the shoulder.

Chief Fowler says his officers are starting to see an increase in the use of "water."

"If ever you want to look for an example in this community of how dangerous this drug is, here it is. Two lives lost, one of which is a 17-year-old child,” said Fowler.

It's a danger that's only increased with the addition of guns and Fowler says young people need to change their attitudes.

"Young people thinking that it's ok, that it's appropriate, that it's necessary to pick these guns up. It's not. It ultimately ends in two young people tragically losing their lives over some absolute garbage, and I continue to use the word garbage when I'm saying this because I can stretch my imagination as far and as wide as I can, but there's no other word that I can come up with when I have to stand up here and talk about the tragic loss of a young, valuable human life,” said Fowler.

Police say Hudson is also responsible for a carjacking shortly after the shooting. He now faces several charges including second-degree murder, attempted murder and robbery.
