SARANAC LAKE, N.Y. -- Senator Schumer and Gillibrand were touring the North Country Friday, reaching out to communities about economic development and other issues. One place they visited was the North Country Community College to discuss rural care for veterans.

The two senators were joined by Wounded Warriors, Homeward Bound and officials from the new vet clinic in Saranac Lake.

Schumer and Gillibrand say they want to focus on getting vets the physical and mental help they need and listened to ideas from to community on what needs to be addressed. They say the Adirondacks are the perfect place to combine these efforts because of the local facilities and natural resources.

Saranac Lake Veteran Affairs Official Fran Karl said, "It's so needed that our veterans, that in order to become fully recovered and fully part of the community, that they do so in a community atmosphere."

Senator Kirsten Gillibrand said, "I hope that we can continue to grow here and be very much part of, not only who we are as a community, but also our future and economic strength."

Some of the main concerns many expressed were jobs for veterans and integration back into society.
