HORSEHEADS, N.Y. -- Strong Kids Safe Kids has been going on now for 27 consecutive years, and over time, the event has grown so more and more help is required.
"I challenge people to do something little, even if you come and volunteer for an hour. At least get your feet wet and get you out in the community and doing good and giving back," said event co-chair Misty Purdy.
Hundreds of people stepped up to that challenge and over 100 local agencies did the same, all in the name of educating children throughout the county.
"It's a good thing to do; it's the right thing to do. It's good for the kids and it's just great seeing everybody here," said Mike Lepak, the Vice President of the Elmira Teachers Association.
Families packed the Chemung County Fairgrounds for free games and entertainment, but more importantly, that free education for kids. Strong Kids Safe Kids is all about promoting children's health and safety issues. There were free health screenings and safety seminars teaching kids everything from the dangers of peer pressure...
"If they tell you to do something bad, you don't listen to them and do something better and make the right choice," said Dylan Beach of Elmira.
...to the prevention of bullying in school.
"They told me not to use bad words to other people. Not to fight in school and stuff. Just go to somebody and tell them," said Danajia Hardy of Elmira.
There is no denying that Strong Kids Safe Kids looks more like a carnival than a classroom. But at the end of the day, kids walk away with some essential safety knowledge that will stick with them for life.
