LIBYA -- With Moamar Gadhafi's reign seemingly near its end, Senators Charles Schumer and Kirsten Gillibrand are calling on the transitional government in Libya to send the Lockerbie bomber, Abdel Baset al-Megrahi, back to prison.

Al-Megrahi was convicted in the bombing of the Pan Am plane that killed 270 people. Many of those on the flight were from Central New York, including a group of Syracuse University students. He had been sentenced to life in prison but was released in 2009 after being diagnosed with terminal cancer.

At the time of his release, doctors gave him just three months to live.

In a statement, Schumer said, "As a transitional government takes hold in Libya, it should seek to undo the injustice of al-Megrahi's release by returning him to the jail cell where he belongs. A new Libya can send a strong statement to the world by declaring it will no longer be a haven for this convicted terrorist."
