SYRACUSE, N.Y. -- The Green Party's candidate for Governor in 2010 is running again. But, this time, Howie Hawkins has his sights set on a different office.
Hawkins said he will try to win the fourth district seat on the Syracuse Common Council this fall. He lost a bid for that seat two years ago.
He said it's time for the city to move aggressively to resolve its budget issues. Among his proposals -- a commuter tax on people working in the city.
Howie Hawkins, a Common Council Candidate said, “The existing businesses that have most of the jobs are non-profits and government. They don't even pay property tax. We have to cover for them. So, if the commuters pay a small tax, and if they all pay it will be small for everybody, it will make a big difference.”
Hawkins vote total in the 2010 gubernatorial race assured the Green Party of an automatic ballot line for the next four years. That makes it easier for the party to field slates of local candidates.
