SYRACUSE, N.Y. -- A group of health officials and community leaders in the Syracuse area are urging Central New Yorkers to volunteer to take part in a massive medical study, aimed at battling cancer.

It's the third time since the 1950s that the American Cancer Society is hoping to follow half a million people for 20 years to track potential lifestyle, environmental and genetic factors that may have an impact on cancer risks.

"The factors are analyzed on a regular basis by the American Cancer Society's research team. And will come out whenever they have a significant finding. There will be reports ongoing. Normally many, many reports of outcomes over the next 20 years," Dr. Leslie Kohman, Medical Director of the Upstate Cancer Center.
