FORT DRUM, N.Y. -- The National Guard and Army Reserves are about to get a brand new training complex and it'll be right on Fort Drum.

Senators Charles Schumer and Kirsten Gillibrand announced a $46.4 million investment into the new facility behind the Wheeler-Sack Army Airfield. That money will go toward phase one of a six-part project.

In total, the plan will include housing and amenities for several thousand soldiers.

The first phase will see one building go up, housing nearly 700 soldiers who have been staying at the old World War II barracks on post.

"It's great now in the sense we've been tearing down the World War II wood on the South post. The World War II wood buildings that have been there for 70 years now have served their country long and hard. They've got to go because they're getting old and dilapidated," said James Corriveau, Fort Drum Public Works Director.

The first phase is expected to take 18 months to finish. If funding is approved by Congress, it'll be five years or longer before the whole thing is done.
