Driving down Erie Boulevard in DeWitt, you may have noticed the Paradise Market is still dark. It was supposed to reopen from its summer holiday September 10th. But as our Katie Gibas reports, that reopening is on hold for some potentially plaza changing development.

DEWITT, N.Y. -- For many of the 150 vendors at the Paradise Market in DeWitt, the location was where they started and grew their business, but now it could be closing for good.

"I enjoyed being there because there was so much to do there. There was, you could get almost anything to eat. You could see entertainment, big name entertainment and you could shop for clothing. You could shop for antiques, whatever you needed," said Selma Adydan, the owner of Behind the Iron Gates and a vendor at the Paradise Market.

The Paradise Market was supposed to reopen last month, but the doors remain closed because owners say they're waiting to hear back from a large company looking at leasing the entire space. That renewed interest in the plaza is what the owners hoped the market would generate all along.

"Just having the lights on in the plaza, that was the object, to get interest back into this plaza. And I think we've succeeded doing that, and obviously by the interest that it has generated, we've have more interest in this plaza in the last four months than we've probably had in years," said Grazi Zazzera, the Paradise Plaza owner.

Adydan said, "I'll miss it but life goes on. And we will still be Behind the Iron Gates and we have a major location, which is great for us."

Zazzera says even though the doors to the Paradise Market remain closed right now, if the companies interested do sign and become tenants here, it will mean big business for the plaza and for Erie Boulevard.

"To have an anchor tenant, obviously, all the smaller spaces will rent out. They'll piggyback on a large tenant, so you want to have your anchor. We still do not have an anchor. And either one of these larger tenants will be a major anchor and definitely a big boost," said Zazzera.

Owners say they hope to have an answer from the interested tenant in about a month.

Owners say the vendors at the Paradise Market lease the space on a monthly basis and if the deal doesn't go through, they will reopen the market. But until then the doors remain closed.

Vendors say would like to see a similar market opened in another location.
