Hazardous Waste Drop-Off Day this Saturday
People living in Onondaga County can take advantage of a designated drop-off day to remove hazardous household materials. The Onondaga County Resource Recovery Agency is registering people for its Drop-Off Day this Saturday in Liverpool. ONONDAGA COUNTY, N.Y. – It’s important to make sure you check your home for any materials that could be harmful to you or the environment. People living in Onondaga County can register online this week to drop off those materials Saturday at the Ley Creek Transfer Station.
OCRRA officials say automotive and cleaning materials, oil based paints, and pesticides can contain harmful chemicals. Fall is a good time to get rid of these products, especially if they've been around the house for a while. Officials say keeping many substances out of the environment has a lasting benefit.
"It's extremely important to make sure these type of items don't end up thrown out or down the drain because what happens is, it makes its way into our water supply. Which can impact our crops and animals, and the other problem is, is that if it's hanging around your house, there's potential for children or pets to ingest it," said OCRRA Public Information Officer Kristen Lawton.
If you live in Onondaga County and would like to participate, you must register on OCRRA's website. You can also find a list of the materials that will be collected there.
If you live outside of Onondaga County, be sure to call your local recycling agency or waste authority to find out if a similar collection may be conducted.
